Marie Rasumsson Bernays, of Cleveland OH, died March 1, 2014. She was 95 and lived in the Bruening Health Center of Judson Park.
Marie and her husband Peter, who died in 2009, lived most of their married life in Columbus. They were the parents of Lynda Bernays (Stan Smith) of Cleveland, Sally Burgess (Ken) of Wolcott, NY, Michael Bernays (Teresa Sanders) of Phoenix, AZ, and Marx Lomoro of Columbus; and grandparents of Alex Fuller (Anna), Sarah Fuller, Jason Burgess (Amanda), Sara Lange (Kaiden), David Burgess (Gwen), Jenna Woods (Phil), Ryan Bernays and Kayla Bernays. Marie is also survived by her brother John Rasmusson (Joan) of Sioux Falls, SD, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Marie was born in Upland, IN, grew up in eastern Nebraska, and attended Bryan Memorial Hospital Nursing School of Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, NE. She served in the Army Nursing Service in the Pacific in World War II; she retired as a first lieutenant in 1946. When the war ended she and Peter were married and in 1955 moved to Columbus, OH, where she lived until her move to Judson Park in 2010
Marie was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church for many years and was active in the Sunday School program and the SOS Food Pantry. She also volunteered with Camp Fire Girls and AFS.
Plans for a memorial service are not yet made. Last spring her family rejoiced in celebrating Marie's 95th birthday with her in Cleveland. Although she wasn't sure who many of them were, she knew we were all here to be with her, and was happy to be surrounded by her brother, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Donations may be made to a place very dear to Marie:
