Marie Strawbridge, beloved mother of Holly, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Leigh, of University Heights, OH, died peacefully on August 21, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert, the former CEO of Higbee's, who died on October 16, 2000, and by her brother Kent and sister Jean.
Marie was a professional volunteer who served on the board of several organizations. Her favorite position was that of vice president of the John P. Murphy Foundation, which enabled her to donate large sums of money to various local causes. A classical music lover, she also enjoyed serving on the board of the Cleveland International Piano Competition. The Strawbridge's moved to Cleveland from Chicago in 1953. Both were very involved in numerous civic activities. Marie, who was a professional runway model before her marriage, was always interested in fashion and, as an adult, was in demand as a model for charity fashion shows. The Strawbridge's joined The Country Club in 1962, where Marie golfed, played paddle tennis and bowled for many years. She was a member of the Intown Club since 1972. Marie attended Lindenwood College for Women (now Lindenwood University) in St. Charles, MO.
She is survived by her daughters, her sister Marjorie (Jack) of Orlando, FL, and several nieces and nephews. Donations may be made to the Cleveland International Piano Competition, 12200 Fairhill Road, Cleveland, OH 44120 or to a charity of choice.
