She went on to graduate cum laude from Kent State University in 1969, with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, and began her 30-year teaching career in Cleveland Metropolitan Schools, first at Jane Addams Vocational High School and later at Collinwood High School where she taught both science and business education courses.
