MARY H. CARINO (nee Hopwood), age 66, passed away on April 23, 2014 after a valiant fight against a recurrence of breast cancer that appeared initially 20 years ago. She was born in Cleveland on December 29, 1947 to Dr. Howard H. Hopwood, Jr. and Jane Hopwood (nee Williams). The beloved wife for 43 years of Dr. Nicholas J. Carino and dear mother of Stephen J. Carino of Ithaca, NY and Christopher H. Carino (Laura) of South Lyon, MI; dear grandmother of Carter, Catelyn, and Courtney Carino; dear sister of Howard H. Hopwood, III (Susan) of Milwaukee, WI and John W. Hopwood (Laurel) of Cleveland Hts., OH.
Mary attended public schools in Shaker Heights and graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1965. She attended Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, and in 1969 received a BS degree in speech pathology and audiology. In 1972, she received an MS degree in the same field and also received her New York State certification to practice in the area of speech and hearing. While living in Ithaca, Mary worked as a speech pathologist and hearing clinician at the Special Children's Center and the Lakeside Nursing Home.
Mary and Nick were married in Sage Chapel at Cornell University on July 31, 1971. Being poor graduate students, their honeymoon comprised a week of camping around Shenandoah National Park. In 1974, Mary and Nick moved to Austin to begin a new chapter in their life. She worked as a speech therapist at the Austin State School, a resident facility for young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
In 1975, with the birth of her first son Stephen, Mary decided to put her professional career on hold and concentrate on being a full-time mother. In 1979, the family moved to Gaithersburg, MD where they remained for 29 years. In 1980, Christopher was born. After both sons were in school, she decided not to return to her career in speech and hearing, but rather volunteer her free time to Whetstone Elementary School. Mary volunteered for a variety of positions including, PTA president and Odyssey of the Mind Coach. Later, she worked part-time with the public school system where she provided remedial training in math and served as a substitute teacher. Everyone who worked with Mary acknowledged her professionalism, dedication, and quest for excellence. Mary was a founding member of Women of Whetstone (WOW), a social group created to nurture lasting friendships among the parents of children who went to school with her sons. Mary was also a dedicated member of her cancer support group in Maryland.
In 2008, Mary and Nick moved to Chagrin Falls to be closer to Mary's beloved Aunt Madge, other family members, and a special place she adored: the summer home in Harrisville, MI on the shore of Lake Huron. Mary was an avid reader and relished the time she could sit on the deck overlooking the blue water of the lake, bask in the warmth of the sun, and be carried away in a cliff-hanger story of espionage or a story of tender love. Her day at the lake followed a strict regimen: pour a cup of fresh-brewed coffee, complete a crossword puzzle, and finish off with a game of Sudoku. She was a firm believer on the need to challenge the mind every day to keep it sharp. Whenever there was a quiet moment during the day, she'd turn to the computer or iPad for a game of solitaire, backgammon, or Words with Friends.
Mary enjoyed being with family and never passed up an opportunity to bring everyone together. One of the memorable events she planned was a family reunion in Michigan in 2008. The reunion had been planned years in advance, and she was determined to go through with it even though she had barely settled into the new home in Ohio. Since moving back to Ohio, she volunteered to host the yearly family Christmas dinner. The hosting skills she'd learned from her dear mother paid off as she was always able to organize a flawless event. No one ever went home hungry.
Mary also liked to travel. Some of her favorite places included: Paris, Venice, Sorrento, Prague, Galapagos Islands, Vienna, and Bangkok. She was especially happy when her travelling companions Deanna or Marianne could come along and explore with her while Nick attended his meetings. She also liked to accompany Nick to his yearly business meetings and made many friends within his engineering circle.
Mary loved dearly her three grandchildren and cherished the brief time that she was able to spend with them.
Who was Mary H. Carino? She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a kind and supportive friend to many, and was always willing to help with a good cause. She was intelligent, practical, and strong-willed. She had a winning smile that made a lasting impression on those she met. She will be missed by all who knew her.
The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to an organization of their choice.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 17th at 9:30 AM in Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights, 2860 Coventry Rd., (at Weymouth Rd.), Shaker Hts., OH 44120.
Interment will follow at Knollwood Cemetery, Mayfield Hts., OH.
