Mary Rountree died peacefully at her home with her daughter Sarah by her side. She lived a full active life right up to her final days.
Mary was born in Ossining, New York and attended Scarborough School and Briarcliff College. She married Philip Rountree in 1948 and started a family in Long Island, New York.
The family moved to Gates Mills, Ohio in 1960, where Mary dedicated her life to home, family, garden and community.
As the children grew older, she began devoting more of her time to community activities. She was head of the St. Christopher's Altar Guild for many years, served the Gates Mills Historical Society, The Gates Mills Library, and was president of the Gates Mills Garden Club and the Shaker Lakes Garden Club. Although Mary was very modest about her abilities as a speaker and a leader, her warmth and personality won over all who knew her.
In her later years, Mary always stayed busy- reading, knitting hats for newborns, caring for her garden, even mowing the lawn as recently as last summer.
Mary is survived by her three children, John Rountree, Sarah Pease, and Phil Rountree, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be a small graveside memorial service in Ossining, New York, date pending.
