Betty Mary E. Shields, Homemaker and Volunteer Betty Shields, a recent resident of the Covenant Village of Colorado Retirement Community died April 21 at age 90. She was a long time Cleveland area resident and was a fourteen year resident of the Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson, OH before moving to Colorado in 2005. Betty earned a degree in elementary education at University of Mount Union. She left teaching after marrying to be a homemaker, and a volunteer mostly in support youth and civic organizations and her church. Her volunteerism on behalf of Mount Union was honored when she was awarded its Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Betty Shields, whose maiden name was Hatton, has been a member for more than sixty years of Cleveland's Church of the Covenant, a Presbyterian congregation which she served as deacon and elder. She was a regular worker in the church's thrift shop and as the coordinator for a bible study group. She was a member of the Cleveland Writers Club and later self published a volume of her poetry as a gift to the family. Betty is survived by her husband, Clifford, whom she married in 1945; sons Richard Cheryl of Kwajalein, Marshall Islands and Kermit Elizabeth of Golden, CO; daughter, Diane, of Aurora, CO; and seven grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, James Erma Hatton of Tempe, AZ. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106, or to the Alzheimer's Association, Cleveland Area Chapter, P.O. Box 74924, Cleveland, OH 44194-4924. Memorial Services will be held at 1 P.M. Friday, July 6 at Church of the Covenant.
