Rachel Hasse, 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011 at the Fairways Assisted Living in Wickliffe. Mrs. Hasse was born Rachel Protheroe, on Feb. 3, 1924 in Troy, NY, the daughter of Beatrice and T.George Protheroe. She grew up in Cleveland Heights, graduated from Eastman School of Music, and taught school until she married Adrian H. Hasse in 1952. The Hasses lived in Euclid until 2010, at which point she lived at the Fairways Assisted Living in Wickliffe. She loved her family, music, playing cello and piano, as well as singing in barbershop quartets, gardening, and was an avid tennis player. From childhood she attended and contributed to the First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland. Surviving are her three children: Liz Hasse Kirtland, OH, Dave Hasse Euclid, OH and Barb Hasse Kascsak & John Warren, OH, her sister Jean Johnson Asheville, NC, 3 step-grandchildren, and 5 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband 1971, her mother and father, and her brother David Protheroe. Mrs. Hasse taught music at University School primary campus from 1970-1991. She was a member of: The Sicilian, The 49ers, Fort-Nightly, Sweet Adeline's, The Racquet Club, The Hermit Club, and led the Tri-C Orchestra. The symphony of the earth is now missing some of its most beautiful notes. On Wednesday, October 26 one of the primary players, Rachel P. Hasse, 87, opted to take her giftings to the heavenly orchestra, where she now plays with no need for a break, or practice, or any of those mundane things. Those of us who remain here have to endure a much less melodic existence. It's a wonderful thing that there are no time constraints, because between her musical sessions, she's fitting in extensive dance routines with her husband, winning all her tennis matches, and preparing elaborate family feasts. You should see her garden! She has no idea the she is without competition the most beautiful blossom in the whole setting. A family friend once told her, "When you smile it lights up the room... " We would have to say, "Not just the room, but the universe surrounding you!" How heaven must be rejoicing with the increase in brightness and music... we envy from here... We can only hope that some fragment of your being has remained in each of us, and may we live to keep the music playing and the light turned on. The Family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in honor of Rachel to the American Diabetes Association. Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland, 3630 Fairmount Blvd. at Eaton on SUNDAY, NOV. 6 at 2PM. FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES MAY CALL AT BROWN-FORWARD, 17022 CHAGRIN BLVD., FROM 2-4 AND 6-8PM SATURDAY, NOV. 5.
