Richard Hughes Hahn of Cleveland, OH, age 76, passed away on April 26th, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Mary Louise Hahn, (nee Woody) for forty-six years.
Born outside Covington, Virginia, he grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He attended Harvard College on a Navy ROTC scholarship and, after graduating with honors in 1958, served in the United States Navy from 1958-1961 during which he was chief administrative officer of the carrier USS Constellation from 1960-61. Upon graduation from Harvard Law School in 1964, he began his career in the railroad industry, serving as assistant general counsel for the Norfolk & Western Railroad (now Norfolk Southern Corporation) in Roanoke, Virginia. The N & W sent him to Cleveland in 1972 to be the chief financial and administrative officer of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. In 1976 he left the railroad industry and became associate general counsel and litigation consultant for SOHIO/BP America. He handled legal work for the Alaska Pipeline at the time when British Petroleum was assuming ownership of Standard Oil of Ohio. Following his retirement in 1994, Mr. Hahn consulted for a number of organizations and worked in New York, Paris, Prague, Budapest and Vienna as a consultant for Central European projects for the Kress Foundation.
Richard Hahn was an avid supporter of the Cleveland Play House and served as president from 1985-1989 and chairman from 1989-1992. In recent years, he was also an active trustee of the Fairhill Center for Aging (now Fairhill Partners) and served as board chair from 2007-2009. Of the several honors he received during his lifetime, Mr. Hahn was most proud of being a recipient of Cleveland Ballet's Kay Williams Scholarship Award.
In addition to his wife, Richard Hahn is survived by his mother, Mary Ellen Hughes Hahn (Harry J.) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; his sister Barbara Hahn Lawson (Lewis) of University Park, MD; his sister-in-law, Joan (Harry, Jr.) and nine nieces and nephews.
The family prefers that those who wish may make a contribution in his name to The Cleveland Play House, 1901 E 13th St, #200, Cleveland, OH 44114 or Fairhill Partners (formerly Fairhill Center for Aging), 12200 Fairhill Rd., Cleveland, OH 44120. Private funeral services will be held in Virginia. Plans for a Cleveland celebration of his life have yet to be finalized.
