Richard Andrews Manuel died Sunday, January 5, at the age of 97.
He was the son of John Sutphin Manuel and Susan Faye Andrews of Cleveland. He was born in Fairport Harbor, OH where his parents were visiting.
His father and uncle had founded W.S. and J.S. Manuel Lake Forwarders, which sold West Virginia coal to ore boats prior to WWII.
He grew up in Cleveland Heights attending University School in Shaker Heights and graduating from Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT. He attended Keewaydin Camp in Temagami, ON. He is a graduate of Yale University and has two master's degrees from Western Reserve University (now CWRU).
In October of 1940 he enlisted with the 107th Cavalry receiving Signal Corp training in Tullahoma, TN. He was stationed in England at Bletchley Park and Bexley on Kent.
He worked briefly at Pickands Mather selling pig iron before moving to New York City to study chemistry at Columbia.
He took great pleasure in playing piano in nightclubs and performing Gilbert & Sullivan with the Blue Hill Troupe.
Manuel was an active outdoorsman playing tennis, skiing, and swimming into his nineties. He spoke French fluently and continued playing the piano until the days before he died. He traveled extensively with his wife and friends. For more than fourteen years he taught 7th grade in the Orange School system.
He was involved with the Tavern Club, Rowfant Club, Kirtland Country Club, Chagrin Valley Hunt Club, the Novel Club, Le Cercle Français, and La Maison Française.
He performed research for the Western Reserve Historical Society and had been the treasurer of the Bascom Little Foundation. Richard Manuel was an ardent supporter of the Cleveland Institute of Music, serving on the board for many years. He was also a founder, board member, and prize giver of the Cleveland International Piano Competition.
In 1960 Richard Manuel married Constance Curtiss, M.D., a childhood friend and daughter of Henry S. and Constance Calkins Curtiss. He was the uncle of the late David Manuel, Jr; and is survived by nieces and nephews Cornelia (Camie) Manuel Ford (Daniel) of Orleans, MA; William Manuel (Christian Inkley) of Houston TX; Susan Manuel of New York, NY; John Manuel (Cathy Murphy) of Durham, NC; Peter Manuel (Beth Robin) of Leonia, NJ; Annie Manuel (Bill Mascioli) of Silver Spring, MD; and sister-in-law Eileen Eyre Manuel of Silver Spring MD. He was predeceased by his parents John Sutphin Manuel and Susan Faye Andrews, and by his brothers David, William, and John.

Memorial services will be held in St. Christopher's By-the-River Episcopal Church, 7601 Old Mill Road, Gates Mills on January 14th at 2 PM. Interment Lake View Cemetery.
