Robert Bennett

Robert Franklin Bennett, M.D. passed away on February 23, 2014, in his home in Lakewood, Ohio.

He was born on March 29, 1922, in Oak Harbor, Ohio to James and Laura (Gensman) Bennett.

Dr. Bennett grew up in Oak Harbor, Ohio. After high school graduation, he attended Adelbert College of Western Reserve University and graduated in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science. He then attended the Medical School at Western Reserve University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1946.

He served in the Medical Corps, Army, Army Medical Department Research and Graduate School, Instructor. He achieved the rank of Captain.

Dr. Bennett completed his internship at Saint Luke's Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio in 1947, and was a resident in internal medicine at Cleveland Veterans Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio from 1949-1952. He became board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1956.
Dr. Bennett was appointed Chief of Neurology, Cleveland Veterans Administration Medical Center in 1952 and held that position until 1980. He then moved to the Spinal Cord Injury Section and continued for the next ten years. During that time, he was active in the education of medical students and residents from both University Hospitals of Cleveland and MetroHealth Medical Center. Dr. Bennett was appointed Assistant Neurologist, University Hospitals from 1962-1980. He was also Assistant Professor Neurology at Case Western University. He retired from active clinical activity in 1991.

Besides medicine, Dr. Bennett enjoyed music and astronomy immensely.

Dr. Bennett is survived by a niece, Dianne Krupp, and was preceded in death by his parents, James and Laura, and siblings, Lloyd and Elizabeth.

Private burial will be at Union Cemetery in Oak Harbor, Ohio.
