Roosevelt Holmes

June 10, 1925 — March 6, 2014

Roosevelt Holmes, Jr came into the world on June 10,1925 in Shadydale, GA. He was born to Roosevelt Holmes, Sr. and Estella White as the first of ten children.

In 1926, the family migrated to Cleveland, Ohio where he grew up and spent most of his life. Roosevelt attended High School in the Cleveland area.

A patriot, he left school just prior to completing the 12th grade, to enlist in the United States Navy where he served as Seaman First Class stationed in San Francisco, CA until his honorable discharge in 1946.

Soon after his return to the Cleveland area, Roosevelt gained employment at Enamel Products as a Machinist.

In 1947, he began courting Eleanor Pattersona"the love of his life, and the girl next door. Before he had as much as said "hello" to her, he declared to his mother, that she was his wife to be. Sure enough, they were married on July 3, 1948.

They welcomed their first daughter Beverly Elaine in April 1951. Followed closely by, Carla Marie in October 1952. He was a devoted father, provider, and contributor to the community.

Professionally, Roosevelt started as Foundary worker in 1952 at US Steel following in the footsteps of his own father. He worked there until his retirement in 1984. However, he was never idle. When he was employed at US Steel, he always had at least one other job. For him, retirement, only mean cutting down. He worked as a valet at the Mayfield Country Club in 1979 and continued working there until 2009 when he retired for good.

He was quite a man about town. Roosevelt's hobbies included landscaping his yard for which he won many neighborhood and city awards, working on cars, even owning a car detail business, "Roosevelt & Jimmy's", with his brother, and he loved visiting the casino.

Roosevelt was a proud American and considered voting to be his civic duty. Days before his passing, he was unrelenting about getting his absentee ballot completed and mailed. He understood what was at stake; especially because he lived in the battleground state of Ohio. In honor of him, we ask that you exercise your right as well.
