SALTERS DeWITT McQUEEN, Sr., Age 85, died March 16th, 2009. Salters was born in Marion, South Carolina, and as a young man went off to war in 1943, serving in the US Navy in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Salters was a pharmacist mate, a medic, during his service and was the only black medic serving in that hospital at that time. After the war, he graduated from Wilberforce University and that was where he met his future wife, the late Gail E. McQueen, whom he buried just a week before his own death. Salters went into government service as a cicilian employee in the US Finance center here in Cleveland from 1948-1966. After that job, he went to work for the US Department of Labor, in the wage and hour division until about 1982 when he went to work for the Cleveland Board of Education, in school registration. He finally retired for the last time in 1992. He was always active in his church choir, Aldersgate United Methodist of Warrensville Heights, but with this additional free time he was able to help out with the church's Meals on Wheels Program as well. Salters enjoyed the game of golf and loved to work in his vegetable garden. Salters is survived by his beloved sons, Salters D. McQueen, Jr. and Christopher M. McQueen, both of Cleveland, OH; his dear grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Theodore, Chelsea and Marquita, and also his loving nieces and nephews. The family suggests that those who wish may make contributions in his name to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4069 Eastwood Lane, Warrensville Hts., OH, 44122, where Funeral Services will be held, Friday March 27th at 11 AM and where the family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service.
