Sandra Lee Crumley (nee Heston) passed away peacefully on December 10, 2023 in Lyndhurst, OH, at the age of 93.
Sandra was born on August 16, 1930, to Wayman and Nila (Hinsey) Heston, in Lafayette, Indiana. She graduated from Speedway High School in Indianapolis in 1948. She received a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Indiana University and a master’s degree in Education from Kent State University. She was employed as a Home Economics teacher in the Shaker Heights School District for 12 years, retiring in 1981. She was also a valued employee of Joann Fabrics, where she shared her love of sewing and crafts. She was well-loved by friends and family for her beautiful sewing creations and wonderful cooking skills.
Sandra was predeceased by four husbands; John Randolph, Howard Markt, Gar Aikins, and David Crumley. She is survived by a sister, Nancy Post, and brother, Larry Heston, both of Florida, and three sons, John Markt (Pam) of Shaker Heights, Steven Markt of Phoenix, Arizona, and Timothy Markt (Heidi) of Mayfield Heights. Another son, Joseph Markt, of Cleveland, predeceased her in 2020. She leaves seven beloved grandchildren, Christopher Markt (Lauren) of Chicago, IL, Sara Whitmore (Russell) of Brooklyn, NY, Lauren Ybarrondo (Aaron) of Helena, MT, Robert Markt (Sarah) of Shaker Heights, OH, Kyle Markt (Kim) of Chicago, IL, Bill Markt (Meredith) of Nashville, TN, and Anne Niecestro (Greg) of Los Angeles, CA and seven great-grandchildren, Ansel, Cameron, Taylor, Caroline, Lucinda, Calvin, and Finnegan.
Sandra enjoyed her retirement years in Stuart, FL, eventually returning to Cleveland to care for her youngest son, Joe. She enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader, and loved keeping in touch with old friends. She especially loved being a mother to her four boys, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, being a teacher, and passing on her love of sewing, cooking, and entertaining to her family. She will be dearly missed.
A private burial service was held. A celebration of life service for family and friends will take place in late Spring, 2024.
The family requests that those wishing to donate in Sandra’s memory consider a donation to the Shaker Schools Foundation or the Holden Arboretum.
