Sarah Carson Newell passed away surrounded by family on October 1, 2015, at the age of 70, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Sarah, daughter of Lillis and William Scott Carson, was the valedictorian of her Swanton, Ohio graduating class and a graduate of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Toledo in Ohio. She and her late husband, Hal Harker Newell Jr., were married in 1969. Before retiring, Sarah worked as an infusion pharmacist at Trinity Healthcare in Winston-Salem, NC. Sarah and Hal also owned an engraving business in Clemmons, N.C. for many years.
Sarah, a resident of Great Cranberry Island, Maine, was active with the Great Cranberry Island Historical Society and supported numerous community events. Before moving to Maine, she and Hal were active members of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC for many years. Sarah was also an enthusiastic part-time New Yorker who mastered MTA buses by day and Uber by night. She was a member of Redeemer Presbyterian Church of New York, NY and a leader in the Redeemer's Diaconate Ministry assisting members.
Inspired by her parents, Sarah's studied for her pilot's license and flew private planes in 1960s. She had a life-long passion for classical music and played the flute. Sarah was a student and teacher who enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and an avid reader. She passed along her love of dogs to her children.
She was a loving and beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister and is survived by her son, Hal Newell III, daughter-in law Tara Newell, daughter Emily Howell, and son-in law Robert Howell Jr., all of New York City, and by her son Phil Newell of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her sister, Cay Friedman of Columbus, OH, by her brothers, Scott Carson of Pagosa Springs, CO, Louie Carson of Toledo, OH and Chris Carson of Swanton, OH.
A memorial service will be held at St. Christopher's-by-the-River Church, Gates Mills, OH on Friday, October 23 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held at Cleveland Botanical Gardens starting at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Sarah Newell to either Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Diaconate Ministry, 1166 Ave of the Americas, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10036, or to Jackson Laboratory, Lung Research, PO Box 254, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
