Susan Wertheimer Deutsch of Shaker Hts. passed away at her home, July 7th, 2013. Susie was 74 years old.
Susie was born in New York City and went on to attend Dickenson College in Carlisle, PA for three years. Susie and her husband, Burt, were married in Larchmont, NY in September of 1959 and moved to Cleveland after a time in Atlanta. After the children were a little older, Susie enrolled in a pilot program created especially for women at Case Western Reserve University. This was created to help women attain an undergraduate level of achievement. Susie was so successful in this program that the college insisted that she meld directly into the MBA program of which she graduated with the Dean's Award for Outstanding Scholarship , GPA of 4.0, in 1980. She always had to explain to prospective clients and employers why she had an MBA from such a prestigious program without benefit of an actual undergraduate degree!
Susie had over twenty years experience as Certified Public Accountant, Chief Financial Officer and CFO-for-Hire serving profit and not-for-profit entities, including St. Vincent - St. Mary High School, Mental Health Services, The Shaker Historical Society and Hope Central School. She started her career with Cohen and Company, CPA's as a Senior Accountant and went on to Retina Associates of Cleveland as their Financial Manager. In addition to handling all the accounting functions of the medical practice, she administered retirement plans and oversaw accounting operations during an expansion from two to five offices. She also served Shaker Investments, as their part-time CFO for a four year term.
Susie found time to be involved in community and professional activities, as well. She was a Docent of the Cleveland Museum of Art, was Treasurer of the Friends of Lee Fisher Committee and was President of the American Women's Society of CPA's Northeastern Ohio Chapter.
Susie is survived by her beloved husband Burton Deutsch of Shaker Hts., Ohio, her dear daughters, Judith Deutsch of South Beach, FL and Elizabeth Ann Miller (Stephen) of Westfield, New Jersey. She was the dear grandmother of Sandford R. "Sandy" Miller and Cassandra "Cassie" Miller and dear sister of Alan Wertheimer (Susan) of Burlington, VT and Eric Wertheimer (Joan) of Providence, RI.
The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to The Jamie Deutsch Foundation, 501 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809-0000.
