Tom Bayless

November 30, 1926 — October 25, 2014

Tom Alfred Bayless passed away on Saturday, October 25th. He was born in Cleveland, OH on November 30, 1926. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Frances Baker Bayless. He is also survived by his adoring children Margaret Louise Bayless (William Schwing) and Nancy B. Cross (Jeffery), and his adoring grandchildren John and Alexander Cross.

Tom graduated with a Masters degree from the University of Michigan, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and manager of the varsity hockey team. He served with honor in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, he had a long and successful career with Standard Oil of Ohio.

Tom was active in scouting throughout his life, joining the Boy Scouts at a young age and earning the rank of Eagle Scout. As an adult he was a Scoutmaster, a founder of the Eagle Scout Association of Cleveland, and the creator of the Golden Book of Eagles which honors each new Eagle Scout in the Greater Cleveland Council.

Tom was an active and devoted Rotarian, being honored as Rotarian of the Year in 2005 (Rotary Club of Cleveland). Tom received many service honors and awards during his adult life. Of special significance to him were his induction into the Shaker Heights Alumni Association Hall of fame in 2002, and his receipt of the Cliff Dochterman Award of the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians in 2008.

Tom enjoyed nature travel. He explored the United States with his wife and daughters during his working years. Upon retirement, he and Fran traveled throughout the world, visiting every continent. He delighted in photographing and videoing the beautiful scenery and wildlife. Tom led a happy and full life, and will be very much missed by his family and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2757 Fairmount Blvd., Cleveland Hts., OH 44118 on Saturday, November 8th at 11 AM.
