Vernita Nail

September 26, 1924 — October 10, 2012

Vernita Chalker Nail was born to The Rev. Dr. Merrill A. and Mable Steib Chaffee on September 26, 1924 in Avon, Ohio. She was a 1942 graduate of Minerva High School and a 1946 graduate of Mount Union College where she received her bachelor's degree in music education. She taught public school in Ohio in the Marlington, Brookfield, Niles and Highland school systems. Her seasonal musical programs were highlights of many students' school experiences and widely hailed throughout the various systems in which she taught. In 1946 Vernita married Wayne Calvin Chalker of Southington, Ohio. To their marriage, three children were born; Kenneth, Melvin, and Carol. In 1959 Wayne Chalker, a veteran of the army, a graduate of Mount Union College and Oberlin Theological Seminary and an ordained elder and local church pastor in the then, Methodist Church, died at the age of 42. Vernita, always a powerfully positive, faith-filled and loving person, carried on with her typical "life must go on" attitude and affirmation. She maintained a wonderfully supportive and love-filled home as a widowed mother of three young children. In 1963 Vernita married Charles Edmond Nail of Shelby, Ohio; a widower raising three children, William, Nancy and Susan, who had been born to his loving marriage with Vivian. Their family home was in Brookfield, Ohio where Charles was the District Sales Manager for Sawhill Tubular Products of Sharon, PA. With hearts full of faith, hope, love and maturing life experience, Charles and Vernita brought two families together in a way that has been - and continues to be - a marvelous example of the power of love to enrich, heal, sustain, encourage, prepare and nurture children for loving, meaning-filled lives. Charles Nail died on Thanksgiving Day in 1995. Since that time Vernita, once again in her typical "life must go on" attitude has continued to build a meaning-filled and purpose affirming life that has come to include grandchildren and great grandchildren. She has been the loving matriarch of her large family, an inspiration to all who have come to know her, a treasure to her friends and now a new member offering praise and sharing love in God's great and eternal Church Triumphant.
