Virginia Paterson

November 20, 1923 — April 9, 2009

Virginia Ely Paterson Dindo died April 9, 2009 at University Hospitals, Cleveland. She was born in Cleveland, OH. on November 20, 1923. "Dindo" was the daughter of S. Prescott Ely and Mabel Collings Ely. She was preceeded in death by her husband of thirty-three years, Thomas Hugh Paterson. Virginia was previously married to Quentin Alexander and William R. Barney, Jr. Dindo is survived by her sons, William R. Barney III of Atlanta, GA. and Prescott Ely Barney Carol of Santa Barbara, CA. as well as grandchildren, William R. Barney IV of Chicago, IL. and Kathleen McColl Barney of Atlanta, GA. A graduate of Hathaway Brown School for Girls and an alumna of Erskine College, Dindo devoted her life to child-rearing, dog raising and being a vital component of any social environ in which she entered. She was a sustainer in the Junior League and was active in its White Elephant Sale. Dindo and her best friend, Virginia Hosford Hossie were in charge of the Hat and Bag Department. She felt that it was important that "two old bags" be in charge of that group. A quick wit and keen observer, Dindo had a marvelous ability to make people laugh. As a result, her friends and acquaintances constantly sought her out. She was never without company and friends. She was a great cook and a consummate entertainer. Her home was the site of many a dinner party. They were events where, as she put it, "Everyone came on time and several stayed too long." It should be noted, too, that Dindo HATED golf and on more than one occassion mentioned that the only good thing about the death of her husband Tom was that she never had to play golf again. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made either to the Animal Protective League, 17291 Willey Ave., Cleveland, OH. 44113 or the Hathaway Brown School, 19600 N. Park Blvd., Cleveland, OH. 44122. Private family services are pending.
