WILLIAM J. CRAWFORD, age 67, of Warrensville Heights, Ohio, died August 23rd, 2009 in the Park East Nursing Home of Beachwood, Ohio. Bill was the beloved husband for twelve years of Janet nee Kersten and the late Joan nee Schwarz. He was the dear step-father of Kenneth Cawthra, Jr. Tammy, Laurie Unger Kenneth, Michelle Boker and Brian Cawthra Angel and the step-grandfather of 10. Bill Graduated from high school in 1961 and joined the US Navy. He served aboard the destroyer USS John R. Price, which was the lead ship in the Cuban Missile Crisis Blockade of October 1962. After his honorable discharge in 1965, he joined the Merchant Marine as an able seaman, working the ore ships of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Ore Company, most notably the William G. Mather, now permanently docked in the Cleveland Harbor. He left the Merchant Marine Service in 1967. Bill managed shoe stores for the next ten years before settling back into uniform as a security officer for several companies, including Tenable Protective Services. Bill was a charter member of the VFW Post 7413, of Warrensville Heights, Ohio and was the first Senior Vice- Commander of the post. Recognition of his loyalty and service to the VFW and the city of Warrensville was evident when he was selected as the Grand Marshall of the city's annual Memorial Day Parade. Bill was an active and faithful member of Our Lady of Peace Church, serving as an usher for over twenty years and as a Past President and Past Marshall of the Holy Name Society. The family has suggested that those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Peace Church, 12601 Shaker Blvd. two blocks West of Shaker Square, Cleveland, OH 44120 where a Funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 28th at 10 AM.
