William Eugene Nieman passed away December 25th, 2013.. He was born November 15, 1932 in New Jersey.
Bill graduated from Bowdoin College in 1954. He was the captain of his tennis team and was state champion for 2 years.
After college he proudly served in the armed forces and was stationed in France for a year and half.
He started his career at Newsweek magazine in New York, then was transferred to L.A. and ended up in Cleveland in 1963 as district manager until their offices closed in 1985.
Bill was a member of the Duquesne club in Pittsburgh, Oakmont, Canterbury golf club and Cleveland Racquet Club. He served on the board of the USTA for a few years.
Besides being an accomplished tennis player, Bill enjoyed playing golf and paddle. A highlight of his tennis career was representing Newsweek at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial tournament at Forest Hills for 6 years in a row.
Bill was also well known in sports circles for the parties he held at his office with Browns' quarterbacks in attendance as guests of honor. Die hard Browns fans clamored to receive invitations to these parties.
Throughout his career at Newsweek, Bill was able to play with many golf and tennis professionals with his customers. ie. Arnold Palmer, Nancy Lopez, Virginia Wade and Rod Laver.
He continued his love for sports into his later years and enjoyed playing golf, tennis and paddle with friends and family. Bill cherished his weekly tennis games and golf rounds with his good friends.. Bill spent countless hours on the tennis courts playing with his son Tim. Bill enjoyed playing bridge and backgammon.
Bill and Lois looked forward to seeing his brother, Ted who he was very close to and Anne and their children every year in Florida. His love for his family was evident and he loved going on vacation with his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
Bill and his family were fortunate enough to have enormous support from friends as he progressed in his disease of dementia.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Lois Lingelbach and brother, Edward Scheller (Anne Louise Demille) Nieman of Florida, and niece and nephews, Nancy,Ted Jr. and Doug Nieman . He was a devoted father to Noelle Fazio (Robert) and Timothy Gibson and loving grandfather to Cara, Michael and Nicole.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Eugene ( Florence Minette Scheller Nieman , and nephew, Robert Nieman.
He will be missed by many and remembered dearly by his family.
