William F. Ruschhaupt, M.D.

We are deeply saddened today by the loss of our friend and colleague, beloved husband, and skilled physician who was respected by all. Dr. William F. Ruschhaupt, an Internist and Specialist in Vascular Medicine and Chairman of Global Patient Services at the Cleveland Clinic, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday. He will be forever remembered and cherished.

Dr. Ruschhaupt was an internationally known physician and personal doctor to countless dignitaries and heads of state. He was deeply humble and compassionate to everyone he touched. At home, he was a close and trusted friend and family man, with a delightful sense of humor and contagious laugh. Bill was a trusted advisor, an avid golfer, but most of all, he was a true gentleman who put others ahead of himself.

Bill traveled the world to see his patients and represent the Cleveland Clinic where he built his prestigious career of more than 40 years. He proudly walked the halls and warmed the hearts of all who crossed his path.

Dr. Ruschhaupt received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine and he took his residency at Cleveland Clinic in 1978. Dr. Ruschhaupt has made countless contributions to medicine, and to his patients. He received his undergraduate degree from Muskingum College in 1968 and his MBA degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1985.

Most recently, Dr. Ruschhaupt has grown and developed relationships within the international market and has paved the way for Cleveland Clinic's current and future endeavors in the ability to serve patients from all over the world. Dr. Ruschhaupt was a colleague but most importantly a friend and mentor to us all.

"Dr. Ruschhaupt's significant contributions to medicine, his patients, and his friends reached far beyond our community to those around the world. He will be missed and forever remembered," said Toby Cosgrove, MD, Chief Executive Officer and President of Cleveland Clinic.

He proudly served the community and actively participated on many boards of trustees including: Former President of the Board at Ronald McDonald House, former President of the board of The Country Club, Board Member of BVU, Board Member of Swagelok, Board Member of Gardner Trane, and Grand Oaks Golf Club. He also served as a Major in the United States Army at Tripler Medical Center in Hawaii as Chief of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Ruschhaupt was the son of The Reverend William (deceased ) and Mary. He is survived by wife, Susan Simmons Ruschhaupt; brother Thomas ( deceased ) and Patricia; sisters-in-law Joyce Simmons and Anne Simmons; and nieces: Jennifer Bethune and Stacey Ruschhaupt.

Memorial services to be held at Intercontinental Hotel Conference Center-Bank of America Room, 9801 Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106 on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 4:00 pm. The family has requested that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic, 9500 Euclid Avenue, Mail Code DV-2, Cleveland, Ohio 44195 or to Church of the Western Reserve, 30500 Fairmount Blvd., Pepper Pike, Ohio 44124.
