William “Bill” J. Stinchcomb, age 74, of Shaker Hts., OH, passed away in early July 2023. He was the loving father of Anna M. Stinchcomb (Zia Ahmed) of Virginia and Andrew D. Cleminshaw (Kendalle Cobb) of Shaker Hts.; loving grandfather to Ali and Catherine; and loving brother to James A. (Louise), David G. (Joan Burton), and the late Dan T. (Judy Boyle).
Bill was born in 1949, in Leadville, CO, to Thomas and Maxine Stinchcomb. He grew up in Evanston, IL, before moving to Cleveland to attend Case Western Reserve University and, later, Cleveland State University. Bill’s long career as a civil engineer is reflected in buildings throughout the country but particularly in the Cleveland area, including retail stores, industrial plants, government buildings, medical, educational, and research facilities, and the Terrace Club at Progressive Field.
Bill was a lifelong athlete. He played soccer and did gymnastics in his youth, became a runner, hiker, and bicyclist in middle age, and, after retirement, was an avid swimmer who especially enjoyed summer swim season at Thornton Park. He also loved music and cared deeply about the natural world. In retirement, he found joy playing the piano every day and volunteering to plant trees around the Cleveland area.
Cleveland was, in many ways, an important part of Bill’s life. He loved the West Side Market, frequented many of the city’s libraries, went to Browns and Guardians games, and spent evenings listening to music at Cain Park or Blossom Music Center. When he was not in Cleveland, he was traveling to visit family members or attend family reunions. Some of his favorite memories were of family trips to national parks in the western United States and overseas vacations with his daughter, Anna.
Bill will be remembered for his kindness, his love for his family and friends, and his enjoyment of good food, especially pie.
A Memorial Service will be held at Old Stone Church, 91 Public Square, Cleveland, OH, at 11:00 on Saturday, July 15. Friends may call at Brown-Forward, 17022 Chagrin Blvd, Shaker Hts, OH, on Friday, July 14 from 5-7PM. Those who wish may make contributions in his name to the Cuyahoga County Public Library Foundation or the Nature Center of Shaker Heights.
