William Ziegler

ZIEGLER, William L., 86, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2013 in Beachwood, Ohio. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan Huffman Ziegler. Bill lived a life devoted to Joan. They met in their college years and wed shortly after in Ravenna, Ohio on September 7, 1949. Several years later they settled in Cleveland Heights.He is survived by his sister, Mary Z. Musselman of Chagrin Falls, Ohio (husband Dale T. Musselman, deceased). He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Dr. Tom Huffman (Beth) of Longmont, CO and Dr. Dave Huffman (Lois) of Longview, WA.

Bill is also survived by his three daughters Nancy Z. Vonderporten (spouse Ken Vonderporten) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Mary Z. Rankin of Columbus, Ohio; and Betsy Z. Dalton (spouse Sean Chiarito) of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. Bill found great joy in family gatherings and getting to know his seven grandchildren Kate, Emily, Molly, Tom, Cassie, Charlie and Meghan. The family enjoyed all of their special times spent together at holidays, weddings, family trips and gatherings in Pepper Pike. There was always much reminiscing and laughter.

Bill was born on May 21, 1927, the day Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris, after his historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean. He was the son of Harold O. and Elizabeth L. Ziegler of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He attended Cleveland Heights High School and afterwards spent one year in U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College and attended Western Reserve University Law School from 1952-1955. During those years he served as a clerk at Ziegler Metzger law firm in the afternoon and studied in the evenings while raising a young family. He received his Bachelor of Law in 1955 and his JD in 1968. After graduation Bill practiced with his father and became managing partner at Ziegler Metzger. His specialties included corporate, estate planning, real estate and probate law.

Professionally, he was a member of the Cleveland Bar Association (former Trustee), the Ohio State Bar Association, American Bar Association, Western Reserve Law School Alumni Board Association (former President), Society of Benchers of the Law School (former Chairman) and Dartmouth College Alumni Association of Greater Cleveland (former President).

Bill belonged to Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. As a young boy he was a Boy Scout in Troop 179 at the church and represented the scouts and the youth of the church as Reverend Ferris laid the Cornerstone of the Main Sanctuary in about 1940.

Helping others was of great importance to Bill,and he was devoted to various organizations including The Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland, beginning in 1970. He later became Chairman of the Board from 1976-1978, and later an emeritus board member. He was an honorary corporate trustee of the American Automobile Association - Ohio Motorists Association. Bill was a member and former trustee and treasurer of the Rotary Club of Cleveland. He was also involved with Bluecoats, Inc., Citizens League of Cleveland and Greater Cleveland Growth Association.

Bill belonged to several clubs in the Cleveland area,the Union Club of Cleveland, beginning in 1970 (former trustee and secretary), the Country Club in Pepper Pike (former trustee and secretary), Rio Verde Country Club, the Cleveland Skating Club (former trustee and president) and the Club at Hillbrook in Chagrin Falls.

Traveling was always special to Bill and Joan, and they traveled extensively. Their adventures included destinations in the United States and around the world. They also shared many hobbies and sports including tennis, golf, ice skating, ice dancing, fishing, bridge and photography. In later years Bill and Joan found happiness in watching birds and wildlife in their backyard, but their greatest joy in life was time spent with their family and dear friends.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life for Bill and Joan will be held at Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2757 Fairmount Blvd., Cleveland Hts., OH 44118 on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service.
